Chris Sutton poked fun at Rangers live on BBC Radio 5, claiming he had more important things to do after missing their win against Real Betis to attend a horse show.
The Celtic hero attempted to skim over the topic of Rangers’ European triumph in Spain, apologising to fans as he refused to comment directly on the result.
Sutton even went as far as to say that the dressage event he attended would have been more stylish than Rangers’ win in Seville when probed by co-host Robbie Savage.
Speaking live on BBC Radio 5 Live [16 December, 19:52], Sutton shared his reaction to Rangers’ win: “I was at the international horse show. I’m sorry Rangers fans, I missed your win, good win as it was, but more important things – a bit of dressage.”
Savage then probed: “Were they as good as Rangers though, in Europe? They were magnificent.”
Sutton then bit back, insisting: “Yeah, probably more stylish.”
Celtic supporters are getting nervous
After Rangers’ European exploits, while the other half of the Old Firm crashed out at the earliest opportunity, it’s no surprise there are some sour grapes from Sutton, who was reluctant to comment at all on the success on Thursday night.
That’s without taking into account the fact Celtic lost to Hearts earlier in the day, opening up the door for Rangers to march through and steal first place if they can win their two games in hand over Celtic when those games eventually roll around.
Philippe Clement’s side remains unbeaten since he took over from Michael Beale in all competitions, and while things haven’t been perfect, they have been good enough to cause some nerves to spike on the other side of Glasgow.
If they can beat Aberdeen at Hampden Park in the Viaplay Cup final and take home the first piece of silverware available for Scottish clubs this season, the pressure will really start to mount, and we’ll see how Sutton avoids his questions then.
