Exclusive: 21-year-old Danish striker agree on January move to join rangers

Rangers are “waiting in the wings” to sign Everton defender Mason Holgate as his loan deal is set to be cut short at Southampton, according to The Sun.

According to a report in the newspaper on December 11, the Toffees are anticipated to recall Holgate from his loan because he isn’t getting enough playing time and find him a new team in the January transfer window.

Under Sean Dyche, the 27-year-old has faded into the background at Goodison Park, which is why he decided to sign a season-long loan with the Saints. Nevertheless, since then, the defender has only managed five appearances.

It’s believed that Watford and Middlesbrough, two Championship teams, are also in the running to sign the centre back on a short-term contract in January.

Deal with Holgate expires in the summer of 2025. Godfrey’s chances of making an impact at Goodison are limited, though, as James Tarkowski and Jarrad Branthwaite are Dyche’s reliable center-back duo, with Michael Keane and Ben Godfrey serving as backups.

After joining from Barnsley in 2015, Holgate finally appeared to be settling in at the team. He has made 149 appearances. But in the 2022–2023 campaign, he lost favour and experienced an injury setback.

Under Philippe Clement, a move would be wise for the Gers as he develops his trade. It would be prudent to bring in a much younger player given that the Belgians’ preferred defensive tandem is thirty-year-old Connor Goldson and thirty-year-old Leon Balogun.

A lack of playing time at Everton and Southampton is undoubtedly a common factor, but Holgate might have the ideal chance to prove to the Toffees what he is really capable of at Rangers.

There’s a chance that the transfer will go wrong. However, Holgate’s loan agreement releases the club from having to pay a transfer fee and commit to keeping him. He will also provide respectable coverage for the older players on the Gers.

In other Rangers news, following reports of injuries at the Ibrox club, a BBC Sport reporter suggested that one of the team’s stars start the League Cup final.
