Todd Cantwell blasted as Rangers star caught lying to ‘random punter’
Gary Keown has blasted Todd Cantwell for his social media “chirruping” after the Rangers star ended up complaining yet again on Instagram this week.
Since his arrival at Ibrox last January, the 25-year-old has been involved in more social media spats than he’s scored goals for the Light Blues.
He hit out at Livingston’s James Penrice for causing him to evade what could have been a nasty injury before seemingly taking a swipe at Scottish referees for the number of yellow cards he’s picked up, claiming he’d been booked less than five times in England [Football Scotland].
Keown has, however, caught Cantwell in a lie and seems thoroughly fed up with the English midfielder’s continual social media dramatics.
“Cantwell, in particular, is just becoming annoying with his chirruping on social media,” said Keown in his Scottish Mail on Sunday column on 19 November (page 96). “This week, in addition to complaining about Livingston’s James Penrice kicking out at him, he was stating to some random pundit that he ‘could count on one hand’ how many bookings he had before coming to Scotland. A spot of rudimentary research reveals he was yellow-carded 20 times between October 2018 and arriving in January 2023. A good record, no doubt, but hardly supportive of his latest flannel.
“It’s about to get brutal for these guys. Properly exacting. The Cautionary Tale of Blabbermouth Beale should show them all that actions and results are what are required instead of Tik Tok dance-offs and bedroom videos about how Chris Sutton used to like you and now he doesn’t.”
Shut up, for goodness’ sake
Cantwell can be an absolutely tremendous footballer.
There’s a reason why his nickname was the Dereham Deco, that he played for England’s Under-21s and played 45 times in the Premier League.
He really did well in his early days at Norwich.
The same went for when he moved up to Glasgow too with Cantwell performing strongly in his opening months as a Rangers star.
However, it’s all gone slowly downhill for the midfielder, who’d rather bicker with the queen of bickering Sutton or moan about incidents in matches on social media than actually work on improving his performances.
Cantwell has just one goal and two assists in 15 total appearances this season.
In his defence, he has been injured and missed a few games but even before his knee issue in September, he wasn’t pulling up any trees.
Philippe Clement has started to overlook Cantwell too with the ex-Norwich player starting just one of four league matches while the Belgian has been in charge.
He needs to start doing less talking with his social media accounts and doing more talking with the ball at his feet on the pitch every weekend.
