Rangers, Middlesbrough and Watford are in a three-way race to sign on-loan Everton defender Mason Holgate in January, sources have told Football Insider.
Due to a lack of action at Southampton, Football Insider reported on Monday, December 11th, that the Merseysiders want to recall Holgate, 27, during the January transfer window.
In order to get the centre back playing more frequently, Everton is eager to end his loan and find him a new team in January.
Watford, Middlesbrough, and Rangers are rumoured to be extremely interested in Holgate and to have been informed of the potential of a January transfer.
Ever since joining Southampton in the summer transfer window on a season-long loan, the centre back has only started four games for the Championship team.
Out of the four games that the England Under-21 international has started, only one has been won by Russell Martin’s team.
Holgate, who reportedly makes £70,000 a week at Goodison Park, will have his Everton contract expire in June 2025.
After struggling for playing time once more, he made just nine appearances in all competitions the previous season. As a result, he will likely join another second-tier team in January.
Since joining Everton in 2015, Holgate has made 149 appearances overall for the team, coming from Barnsley.
Rangers, who currently occupy the second spot in the Scottish Premiership, have the opportunity to advance to the Europa League knockout stages if they defeat Real Betis on Thursday, December 14.
Although both Watford and Middlesbrough had a terrible start to the 2023–24 season, they are both in the Championship and very nearly in a play-off spot.
