Rangers have held discussions with Premier League star for January:

Rangers manager Philippe Clement has admitted he’s already spoken to midfielder John Lundstram about a new contract.

John Lundstram has been on resurgent form at Ibrox under the Belgian manager with the 29-year-old one of Rangers’ top performers in recent weeks.

With the ex-Sheffield United midfielder’s contract up at the end of the season, it’s led to much chatter surrounding a potential new deal for the player.

Speaking to ViaPlay after the League Cup Final win over Aberdeen, Philippe Clement touched on the importance of John Lundstram and admits the Rangers star is in his thoughts regarding a new contract.

Philippe Clement in John Lundstram contract admission

Rangers boss Philippe Clement was quizzed about the situation surrounding John Lundstram’s contract by journalist Emma Dodds.

Admitting that early discussions have already taken place, the Ibrox boss believes the situation will be shelved until the coming weeks and months.

It comes with John Lundstram being an ever present for Philippe Clement since the Belgian came into the club.

“Yes of course I’m thinking about that (John Lundstram’s contract),” said Philippe Clement. “But that’s something for the next weeks, the next months to discuss.

“I’ve spoke already with him about that. He knows what I feel, I know also what he feels so yeah, that’s for the next weeks and months.”

Rangers midfielder “important in many ways”

Philippe Clement was also asked by former Rangers midfielder Scott Arfield about the role of John Lundstram in his squad.

The ex-Ibrox midfielder is now turning out for Charlotte FC in the MLS but was on punditry duties for the League Cup Final at Hampden.

Claiming that John Lundstram is amongst one of several leaders in the Rangers squad, Clement believes the midfielder is “important in many ways” at Ibrox.

“He’s important in many ways,” said Clement. “He’s somebody who never hides.

“He always wants the ball, he understands the tactical story we want to do every game because it changes every game to find spaces against the opponents.

“He’s also a leader in the dressing room and on the pitch and you need somebody like that – a right hand – on the pitch.

“And I have several now. We have several players who take responsibility and I only need one word and they understand and they help the team in that way.

“So that’s crucial as a manager who have guys like that.”

John Lundstram has made 27 appearances for Rangers this season and 127 in total for the Ibrox side since his switch from the Premier League in 2021.
