According to Football Scotland, Rangers do not currently plan to name Stuart Webber, the head of Norwich City’s recruitment, as their new sporting director.
The update was posted on the Scottish outlet’s website on Thursday morning, November 2, in response to earlier reports that Rangers were keen to sign Webber.
It had previously been reported by The Scottish Sun [29 October] that the Gers were on alert as Webber is set to depart Norwich in the next fortnight.
Mark Hendry’s report for Football Scotland [2 November] read: “The Sun claimed Webber was one man on the wanted list at Ibrox but Football Scotland can reveal there has been no approach made and that the interest is not there at the moment.
“He has also been touted as a potential Leeds United head of recruitment option this season.”
Links with Webber made sense on the face of it as he appears to be on his way out of Norwich and ticks plenty of boxes for the Gers, who have been seeking a replacement for Ross Wilson since he joined Nottingham Forest in April.
Michael Beale was allowed to oversee transfer activity in the summer, with that proving to be a huge howler on Rangers’ behalf, while the Englishman’s exit last month has now further complicated matters.
Brighton and Hove Albion chief Sam Jewell is another name supposedly on the Light Blues’ list of targets [Daily Record, 14 October], but for now the search for Wilson’s successor continues.
It goes without saying that an appointment needs to be made soon, as already teams are gearing up for the January transfer window.
The longer this search goes on, the more at risk Rangers are of being left behind.
