Former Reading FC captain Matt Mills compared former manager Brendan Rodgers to comedian David Brent and chastised him.
Recalling his brief tenure under Rodgers, Mills stated on the Under the Cosh football podcast in 2022: “It turns out I don’t really like the guy at all.” I signed up for Reading after he gave me the best line ever and I thought, “This guy is unreal.”
Sold me a dream. He talks about the ultimate game ever. To be fair, great coach.
He once began speaking in Spanish during a team meeting. Not a single Spanish player present. “What the f****** is going on here?” was our thought.
Even though Mills likened Rodgers to the comedic role played by Ricky Gervais, he acknowledged that Rodgers’ coaching style was not appropriate for Reading’s team.
Because of this, Rodgers’ tenure as Royals manager was brief; in December 2009, he departed the squad just one spot above the relegation zone.
“He’s like David Brent out of the Office,” Mills went on. I must admit that he is an excellent coach. The players we had at Reading just weren’t cut out for the style he wanted to play.
“Over the summer, I underwent a knee op and signed.” Don’t train throughout the summer, the surgeon advised; you’ll be a little overweight and untrained, but your knee will be OK for the remainder.
“I needed to get in shape because I was overweight when I signed up for Reading. I played three games in the beginning of the season. We lost, I scored on my debut, and then we drew. After that, he brought in a boy from Celtic, and I stopped playing.
I once told him, “Gaffer, we’re at the bottom of the league, and I don’t think I could play here,” when I went to visit him.
“He’s turned around and left, ‘Gucci belt,’ no word of a lie.”
“He’s really into the way of life. unusual man
Before taking over as manager of Liverpool, Rodgers enjoyed success at Swansea City, despite his disillusionment as head coach of Reading.
This is the 51-year-old coach’s second stint back at Celtic, where he leads the Scottish champions.
Before being traded to Leicester City in July 2011 for a reported £5 million, Mills played 75 games for Reading across all competitions and rose to the position of captain.
