Reading boss Ruben Selles speaks on transfers*

READING manager Ruben Selles admitted that the EFL has been strict with the club over transfers due to their continued financial troubles.

In an interview with Training Ground Guru Podcast, Selles talked candidly about his rocky first six months as a member of the team.

Defenders Tom Holmes, Nelson Abbey, and Nesta Guinness-Walker have departed the Royals with only a few days remaining in the January transfer window.

Holmes returned to Reading on loan for the remainder of the season after joining Premier League Luton Town.

“If necessary, we can sell some players and reopen the process in the offseason the following year. Right now, keeping them together is our first goal. I’m not sure whether that will be possible, but I’ll fight for it.

The club will let them go if a suitable offer is made because the financial situation is unstable.

Selles stated, “We cannot pay for a player but can bring loans or free transfers if they fit within our salary limitations,” when discussing the possibility of adding players.

“On that, the EFL has been really severe with us. There have been occasions when they have decreased our ability to pay players. Maintaining participants in this market is my top goal.

Until at least January 2025, Reading is only allowed to sign loans or free agents due to a transfer embargo.
