Reading FC favourite follows former Royals teammate to Qatar”

Former Reading favourite Lucas Joao has made his latest career move, joining Umm Salal Sport Club in Qatar.

After five years with Sheffield Wednesday, the 30-year-old went to Berkshire in 2019 and established himself as one of the league’s top strikers while a Royal.

The Angola international played for Reading for four years, scoring 45 goals in just 119 games before leaving when the team was relegated at the end of the previous year.

Joao moved to China to play for Shanghai Port, where he scored three goals in ten games and, with former Chelsea player Oscar, helped the team win the Super League under the direction of Wolves icon Kevin Muscat.

Joao did not stay long; he recently joined Umm Salal, the winners of the Qatar Stars Cup in 2024.
After leaving Berkshire for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, former Royal defender and Joao’s colleague Naby Sarr took a well-traveled route to Al-Markhiya.

As things did not go as planned, Sarr was demoted from the Stars League at the conclusion of his rookie season.
