See why Reading FC boss sweats over Holmes*

Reading are sweating over the fitness of vice-captain Tom Holmes ahead of tonight’s clash with in-form Stevenage.

The teams will play their first league game at the Lamex. With a win, the Royals, who have only lost once in ten games, may move out of the relegation zone.

But Steve Evans’ team has won four of their previous five games and is currently in the play-offs.

They will probably need to succeed without Holmes if they are to win in Hertfordshire.

The on-loan centre back missed Saturday’s Thames Valley Derby tie at Oxford United due to a fractured back he suffered in a challenge against Leyton Orient.

Ruben Selles stated, “It is a bit tricky because he has a partial fracture,” in reference to his availability. The key concerns are his range of motion and his ability to play through the pain. It takes an average person six weeks, but it can take an average person much longer. I’m not sure if he’ll succeed Stevenage. We are in a scenario where we have to wait all day.

“He merely needs to get the discomfort from the first few days out of his system and regain movement; this fracture won’t require a lot of rest or stopping. Although it is a really uncommon injury, we take it every day.”

While Amadou Mbengue filled in for Holmes at the Kassam, several supporters demanded that veteran Harlee Dean be allowed back into the fold.
