win over title challengers, Reading FC manager reacts to win over title challengers”

Reading FC Women’s boss Liam Gilbert acknowledged ‘grit, determination and hard work’ for the reasons for his team’s away success at Charlton Athletic.

The Royals moved further clear of the relegation zone in the Women’s Championship by defeating title hopefuls Charlton Athletic courtesy of a stunning strike from Charlie Wellings.

“Immeasurable praise is due to each and every player. The way they supported one another, fulfilled their individual roles on the pitch, and managed their disappointment from the previous week by giving a strong performance.

“This group has shown incredible dedication and attitude both on the pitch and in training, and I have nothing but praise for what they have accomplished.”

“We have stated throughout the season that this group has an incredibly unique bond and connection, and their business practices have been of the highest calibre.

“Everything we asked of them on board has been taken, no one has gone into hiding, and today’s (Sunday) delivery was excellent.”

The Royals moved up to eighth place in the standings with their fourth victory of the year, and it was only the second time this season that the Addicks had been defeated.

With seven league games remaining, Reading is currently eight points clear of the danger zone.

Gilbert went on, “To pick up three points and a clean sheet is outstanding because the challenge against a team that had only lost once all season and was vying for the title couldn’t have been tougher.”

“Today’s victory goes much beyond just earning three points. We can get momentum from our ability to demonstrate that we can match these squads. We will not give up; there is still work to be done.

“As coaches, we couldn’t be more proud of this entire squad, including the players.

We’ve all had some really open discussions about not taking anything for granted, and today has shown that we’re all moving in the right direction.
