Mpofu, 15, was born in Scotland but lived primarily in Berkshire. He has been with the Royals for three years.
The kid, who has consistently impressed for the Academy teams, is now a Scotland Under-15s international, and Mailsport believes he is desired by the Red Devils to join their famed Academy for next season.
He will be the latest in a long line of young Royals to leave Reading’s development setup for the North-West, joining Luca Fletcher, Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, and Christian Dunbar-McDonald at Manchester.
This follows a successful week for the Academy as a whole, with Noel Hunt’s Under-21s narrowly missing out on the PL2 Final after a heartbreaking 4-3 loss to Sunderland on Monday.
This summer marks the Academy’s 25th anniversary, with 80 young players moving up from the youth teams to the first squad since 1999.
