Reading: Fans visit Houses of Parliament to protest against owner

Reading supporters have protested at the Houses of Parliament against the club’s Chinese owner, Dai Yongge.

Along with carrying their protest throughout the city, supporters also paid a visit to the English Football League’s headquarters in London.

After the EFL imposed several sanctions, they want the owner to sell up.

Spokesman for the Sell Before We Dai movement Nick Houlton stated: “The pressure stops as soon as Dai sells the club.”

He went on to say: “He must strike a takeover deal before we face even more financial pain.”

Additionally, the group aimed to raise awareness of other clubs dealing with ownership issues.

“This action wasn’t just for Reading FC, but the countless other clubs facing financial difficulties because of poor ownership and outside vested interests,” said Houlton.

“We hope this action continues the conversation about football’s ownership problems and highlights further the need for an Independent Football Regulator.”

Prior to Us Selling Additionally, an online fundraiser to support the club’s off-field employees is being supported by Dai and the Reading Supporters Trust.

On December 3, following Reading’s 2-1 loss to non-league Eastleigh in the FA Cup second round, fans staged a protest by hurling tennis balls and fictitious money onto the pitch.

The League One team has also been subject to transfer embargoes; these were most recently imposed in September after the team failed to pay an outstanding tax bill.

Sell Before We Dai’s Caroline Parker said to BBC South, “We’ve done as much as we can locally; there have been protest marches, there has been game disruption.

“We can only receive so much coverage from the tennis balls; that reached its peak when the FA Cup was broadcast on television.
