Reading FC chiefs ‘forfeit wages’ in solidarity with staff:

Reading Director of Football Operations Mark Bowen has revealed that he, along with manager Ruben Selles, have ‘forfeited’ their wages until the rest of the non-playing staff are in full.

News broke on Thursday that there were not sufficient funds to satisfy the payroll in full and that only the players would be paid in order to avoid another points deduction.

Non-playing staff were paid up to 50 per cent, some as low as 25 per cent, with the promise that the remainder would be paid by Tuesday [tomorrow].

Speaking to ITV ahead of the Royals’ exit in the FA Cup to Eastleigh, Bowen confirmed that neither he nor Selles have received a penny of their November pay packet.

“There was not enough funding coming into the club this month to pay everybody in full,” the former first-team manager told Gabriel Clarke. “The chief executive made the decision to pay the players to stop us from getting another points deduction and there was a percentage paid to the rest of the staff.

“Myself and Ruben, the manager, decided that we would forfeit all of our wages until the staff are paid in full. We are told that the funds will arrive and everything will be sorted by early next week.”

Staff were paid late three times over the summer, resulting in a three-window transfer ban.
