Ruben Selles Dissects Reading’s 2-1 Defeat To Fleetwood

The manager emphasised poor finishing in a game that Reading drew level in, but couldn’t find a winner before succumbing to a late Fleetwood goal.

The Royals lost 2-1 against Fleetwood, another struggling team, when they returned to the Select Car Leasing Stadium.

After barely two minutes, Fleetwood seized the lead. Josh Vela’s game-winning goal in the last seconds gave the visitors the three points, after Dom Ballard had tied the score early in the second half.

For us supporters, it’s a really frustrating and worrying period, as there is a growing urgency for change in many areas. Here’s what manager Ruben Selles had to say, as quoted by the Reading Chronicle and the club’s official website.

We were not even close to where we needed to be in the first thirty minutes.

Weaknesses in our strategy included missing passes, losing possession, and failing to respond appropriately when under pressure.

Additionally, we let up a goal quite early David made a few excellent saves to keep us in the game over the first thirty minutes.

We regained our composure and had solid opportunities to even the score or even win.

We did score, and we ought to have added more since we twice struck the post and had other excellent chances and then we made the same error again at the finish of the game, giving up another late goal in the last moments of

“Right now, things aren’t turning out the way we would like.

Naturally, though, we must be stronger and more capable right away.

We’ve been discussing the need to be more brutal in both boxes. And nothing has changed; we still need to score the opportunities we produce and better guard our box.

“We are all in this together, and it is about supporting the guys who don’t score their chances and defending a position as a group. It’s not about one player missing a chance or one player making a mistake at the back. But we must use more ruthlessness.

“We would be discussing a different tale right now if we had scored with a few of the opportunities we have had in the last few games.

We’re looking at ways to alter that as well. You can discuss the players selected or the system; naturally, we evaluate every aspect; nevertheless, occasionally, the issue is with specific aspects of the execution And with it, we can all perform better.

“We want to exert pressure on the offensive end and be mean when we’re on defence, and we want to do that together.” However, we must act with greater vigour in all that we do.

We’ve been working hard enough to obtain more than we did from the games, and we know we can do even better. But we are aware that no one will assist us. No one is going to come here and take care of our needs to do for us.

The only ones who can turn the situation around right now are the players, myself and the coaching staff. And that is what we need to do.”
