The former Newcastle United owner amid Reading FC Take over Details

Mike Ashley is keen to be involved in Reading but only as their stadium landlord now rather than an owner, according to The Sun.

The former Newcastle United owner has been linked with the Royals for weeks now, with Frasers Group helicopters landing at the stadium a number of weeks ago.

That increased speculation about a potential takeover, with many supporters keen to see Ashley take control of the club considering the experience he has.

However, it’s unclear how close he is or was to sealing a deal with current owner Dai Yongge, who seems to be ready to sell up following a turbulent six-year spell at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.

He appeared to be on the verge of losing exclusivity, with Genevra Associates previously close to negotiating an exclusivity agreement, but it’s unclear whether that arrangement has fallen through or is still in the works at this point.

At this moment, there has been no more update on the story, which could have given Ashley some optimism if he wanted to acquire the team rather than simply the stadium.

What’s the latest on Mike Ashley’s interest in Reading?

Ashley is reportedly keen on buying the stadium, according to The Sun.

He has done the same at Championship side Coventry City – but it’s currently unclear whether owner Dai is keen to sell the stadium along with the rest of the club.

However, there have been conflicting stories about Ashley’s involvement, with The Telegraph previously saying that Ashley had launched an official bid to buy the entire club.

He has been without a club since leaving St James’ Park, and he may wish to return to the game.

Should Reading supporters be happy if Mike Ashley strikes a deal to buy the Select Car Leasing Stadium?

Many supporters will oppose him having control of the stadium if he does not take control of the club.

Ideally, the club’s owner will purchase the stadium and name it after the Royals, ensuring that the club can play its games there regardless of what happens.

The Royals don’t currently have possession of the SCL Stadium, which isn’t ideal, therefore Genevra Associates or whoever wins exclusivity should attempt to buy the stadium with the club, even if it means paying a bit more.

Without authority over a stadium, significant problems and instability can arise, therefore for the benefit of the Royals’ eventual owner(s), a solution must be struck to assure the arena returns to the team.

That potential insecurity might have a significant impact on the pitch. In the past, the Royals’ off-field issues have taken their toll.

Ashley may be a good owner if he is also interested in football, but if he takes control, he should listen to the fans.

They’ve been through a lot in recent years, and they need someone to come in and make a difference in Berkshire.
