Losing a match to a late set-piece… it can feel like one of the worst ways to suffer defeat. And that’s what happened on Sunday when Eastleigh scrambled in a corner to bypass the need for a replay and book their place in Round Three of the FA Cup.
Harvey Knibbs evaluated the exchange and the camp’s collective disappointment.
“Very disappointing,” he remarked. “We played a dominant first half of the game, but we gave up during the half. By the end of the first half, they had gained momentum, and we were finding it difficult to handle their aggression.
“The adjustments were helpful, and we achieved the desired outcome. Then again, we have to control the situation, if not actually win it.
That’s how football works. You risk punishment if you don’t take risks. It is imperative that we improve in both categories.
“We wanted to deliver another victory to these travelling supporters and carry on that positive vibe. Sadly, though, we haven’t today. We’re all incredibly irritated.
“I’m sorry for the fans who made the trip… The outcome is insufficiently good.
There’s a cup competition going on, and there will be a lot of games during the Christmas season. However, the squad is adequate. No one should be let down, no matter who enters. These are the kinds of games we should be winning, even with eleven changes.
