Lennon insists Rangers should not have had penalty against Aberdeen

The Ibrox side was handed a spot-kick in injury time by referee Nick Walsh, who was prompted by VAR to examine a brawl between Stefan Gartenmann and Connor Goldson in the box.

After a second look, the referee determined that the Dons defender had fouled the Englishman. James Tavernier scored the penalty kick to tie the score at one.

Lennon concurred with Pittodrie manager Barry Robson, who was incensed with the judgement and referred to Goldson’s fall as “theatrical”.

It’s not a penalty for me’, he remarked, speaking to PLZ Soccer. It wasn’t enough, in my opinion. He is holding the shirt, but it doesn’t seem like he is actually dragging it. There is a shirt pull.

“In addition, I believe Goldson has a really dramatic breakdown. I’ve seen other shirt pulls go unpunished, but when I look at it again, the blocking—we had this conversation with Hearts a few weeks ago—there is consistency there if you want to look at it by the letter of the law.

“I can appreciate both Barry’s annoyance and the viewpoint of those who believe it to be a penalty.

“I don’t think the tug is strong enough. I believe he briefly grabbed hold of his shirt, although that could simply be a result of his distress over being blocked.

“That is an obstruction in the box.”
