Pundit slams Rangers star despite win”

Despite a convincing Rangers victory against Ross County on Wednesday 14 January, Neil McCann was critical of John Souttar for his role in The Staggies’ equalising goal.

Cyriel Dessers opened the scoring after just five minutes, but instead of dropping their heads, Ross County looked to take advantage of Rangers’ weakness in defence.

Simon Murray equalised in just twenty-five minutes, volleying the ball past Jack Butland with the defence was nowhere near the striker following a pass in behind.

On Wednesday, February 14, McCann stated via BBC Sportscene: “You just have to turn Rangers if you play [Eamonn] Brophy and Murray.” You witnessed Aberdeen’s excitement when they hit balls over the net.

When there is a knock on the ball, John Souttar is out there attempting to hit Murray. Although Souttar’s body is positioned incorrectly, Goldson ought to halt the cross. James Tavernier needs to get in and deal with the current threat.

Philippe Clement had no right to be happy with his team’s performance leading up to Ross County’s game-tying goal. Too many times, Rangers have been caught off guard by a long ball over the top.

As McCann said, Aberdeen has also been a team in the Scottish Premiership to take advantage of this vulnerability, as seen by Bojan Miovski’s numerous mishaps in Neil Warnock’s debut match as manager of The Dons.

The signs of a title-winning club were unmistakable, even with Rangers’ glaring defensive weakness. Dessers scored twice, and Souttar made up for his error by heading a late goal to seal a 3-1 triumph.

Although the 27-year-old centre defender will undoubtedly have made up with Clement for his poor decision, the Belgian should still be concerned. It’s dangerous to use the strategy of only trying to score more than the opposition.

Although Tavernier took a while to respond in the build-up to Murray’s goal, a hat-trick of assists would have more than made up for the defensive lapse.
