Clement is unbeaten in his first 14 games at Ibrox, overseeing the revival of a Scottish Premiership title bid, the winning of their Europa League group with a shock win away at Real Betis and the reaching of a League Cup final this weekend.
The Belgian’s success in Govan has delighted former Rangers player McCann, who believes his old team will defeat Aberdeen.
“I don’t think he could have wished for a better start in his Rangers career,” McCann said in a statement on BBC Scotland’s Sportscene on Saturday night, December 16.
Following the news that Clement had not lost in 14 games, McCann said, “It’s unbelievable.”
“I think the group is getting stronger, and it’s quite an amazing result to go into the round of 16 to go over to Spain and beat Betis, who hadn’t lost at home all season.”
“I see a side that is strengthening and improving.
“Everything points to Rangers having a successful outcome.”
Many will argue that Clement and his team should approach this game like any other.
However, that is incorrect.
This is Clement’s opportunity to begin etching his name in Ibrox history—this is the cup final. This is also an opportunity to make amends against Aberdeen, who have triumphed at Ibrox this season.
Manager Michael Beale was a farce.
Clement has quickly begun to instill confidence in players such as Sam Lammers and Cyriel Dessers to play strong roles and score the kind of consistent points that have the Gers putting pressure on Celtic.
On paper, defeating Aberdeen ought to be easy, but football isn’t really played on paper, is it?
There is a lot more pressure because it is the cup final. The pressure will start to build on players if they are instructed to approach it like any other game.
It’s going to be a big one, a game they have to win.
If Clement loses, he won’t face criticism, but if he does lose, nobody will bring up his 14-game winning streak. He will always be remembered as the manager who lost his first opportunity to win a trophy in a cakewalk of a final.
