Championship as strong as its been in 20 years insists Rotherham United manager Leam Richardson’

IN THEIR quest to compete in the Championship, Rotherham United have natural disadvantages in terms of budget, squad resources and training facilities to name but three things.

Another factor that works against them is history.

The Millers faced clubs of a comparable stature at this level back in the early to mid-2000s, including Grimsby, Gillingham, and Walsall. Yes, it was definitely more of an equal playing field.

Only five teams—the Millers, Millwall, Plymouth, Bristol City, and Preston—have never participated in the Premier League, despite the level they currently play in being populated largely by big-city teams.

Leam Richardson enjoys playing in the second division despite everything, but for teams like the Millers who are relegated to the bottom of the standings, the challenge is growing more difficult.
In a South Yorkshire derby on Saturday, Richardson’s bottom-dwelling team will play fellow struggling team Sheffield Wednesday. He declared: “I love the Championship – managing and coaching in it.”

“You can see all of the clubs and parachute payments that are included. Few clubs in the Championship, in my opinion, have never played in the Premier League.

It’s been as competitive as I’ve seen it in twenty years, which is fantastic for spectators, players, and neutral parties alike.

It goes without saying that we wish to be somewhere else than where we are right now. We’ll work hard to ensure that we’re further along the line.”It’s undoubtedly a worthwhile and healthy task.

For a manager of the Millers at this level, it’s difficult enough to get it right on a Saturday and during the week. However, it needs so much more in order to become long-term viable.

Richardson went on, “Yes of course, it goes without saying. Our side is winless in 2024.”

The owner has been fantastic for many years with our football team, and above all, he wants to stay and see us get better from where we are.

“It’s fantastic that he won’t give up on leading the football team forward; it will only benefit everyone else involved.”
