Matt Taylor decision amid 3 managers on list- reports

The Daily Mail reports that following a dismal start to the 2023–24 Championship season, the 41-year-old’s duties have been relieved by the United leadership.

Although Taylor’s status at Rotherham has not been confirmed, there appears to be no chance of his staying at the New York Stadium much longer. Local sources suggest that the former Exeter City manager has not been fired yet.

So let’s look at THREE candidates that Chairman Tony Stewart may consider to succeed Taylor in the dugout.

3. Chris Wilder

With Taylor leaving or not, Rotherham will undoubtedly look to experience, and Wilder may be a great fit.

Of course, Wilder managed Sheffield United in the Premier League a few years ago, but following spells at Middlesbrough and Watford, his reputation has somewhat suffered.

Nonetheless, he is a highly esteemed Championship level manager, so it may come as a surprise that the 56-year-old isn’t employed at the moment.

You would think that Wilder would seize the chance to take charge of a team like Rotherham, who have some talented Championship players and are located very near to his hometown of Sheffield.

2. Gary Rowett

Rowett, who just left Millwall, is another seasoned Championship mainstay who could be able to get more from the present Millers team.

Rowett has been the manager of Birmingham City, Derby County, Stoke, and the Lions, with some of his tenures being more successful than others. However, for the last several years, Millwall has been playing above their class in the play-off battle thanks to his leadership.

Although there are moments when Rowett’s playing style leaves a lot to be desired, it is generally successful, and he may still have something to offer in the English football second division at New York Stadium.

1. Neil Warnock

Championship teams often go to Warnock as a last resort to push their teams to new heights; Rotherham has previously employed this strategy and found success with it.

After Neil Redfearn was fired in 2016, Warnock was brought in to turn around the faltering team. In his 16 games as manager, the shrewd old veteran guided the team to safety in the second division with six wins.

Rotherham will always have a special place in Warnock’s heart for pulling off a near-eight-year relegation triumph, which he called his finest football success upon his 2022 retirement that wasn’t really a retirement.

Since then, Warnock has managed to keep Huddersfield in the Championship despite significant odds against him, so Tony Stewart could give the 74-year-old another call in an attempt to turn around the team’s fortunes as they slip into a struggle for relegation.
