Following his departure from Rotherham United, Sam Clucas, a former midfielder for Hull City and Stoke City, has joined Oldham Athletic, according to the club’s official website.
The former Premier League player was quickly signed by the National League team on a contract that would last until the end of the current campaign.
After his contract with Rotherham United expired at the end of the previous season, Clucas, 34, severed his links with the team and has been considering his options ever since.
“I’m thrilled to sign and finally get this done,” he said on the Latics website after moving to Boundary Park. It’s a fantastic group to join, and I’ve been exercising with them for a few weeks now.
This is an excellent opportunity because there is a mix of young and experience, and the manager is a pleasure to work with. It’s a huge club that clearly shouldn’t be at this level, so if I can come in and tell the guys about my experience, maybe we can make some progress.
Ex-Hull City and Stoke City man’s new move
Under the direction of former Fleetwood Town, Shrewsbury Town, and Tranmere Rovers manager Micky Mellon, Clucas will be happy to have found a new home and will hope to play a lot in the fifth division with Oldham Athletic.
The Lincoln native began his playing career at Chesterfield, Lincoln City, Mansfield Town, and Hereford United.
He was signed by Hull City in 2015, and throughout his two years at the MKM Stadium, he developed into a vital member of the East Yorkshire team.
Following his debut season under Steve Bruce, Clucas assisted the Tigers in defeating Sheffield Wednesday at Wembley and winning the Championship play-offs.
After Hull City was demoted, he attracted attention in the top division and was able to get a transfer to Swansea City.
However, the former England C international left for Stoke City after failing to make an impression with the Swans.
Clucas later played in 143 Potters games across all competitions, scoring 19 goals.
Now what?
He played in the second division for Rotherham United last season, but they decided not to extend his contract.
In a bold move, Oldham Athletic has now acquired him, and he will be looking to assist them in their comeback to the Football League.
