Rotherham United confirm signing of defender

Rotherham United are delighted to confirm the signing of defender Sean Raggett, who will join the club upon the expiration of his contract with Portsmouth this summer, subject to EFL and FA ratification.

After leading Portsmouth to the Sky Bet League One championship the previous season—during which he made 44 appearances across all competitions—the 30-year-old defender is back in South Yorkshire.

After enjoying a brief loan at AESSEAL New York Stadium during the 2018–19 season, Raggett joins the Millers as their seventh summer addition. Manager Steve Evans moved quickly to secure a two-year contract for Raggett.
He moves north alongside Joe Rafferty, his other former Portsmouth teammate, with whom he played a key role in one of the meanest defences in the division in the third tier that won the championship.

The defender progressed through the ranks at Dover before agreeing to a transfer to Lincoln City in 2016. It was during his time with the Imps that he made history by scoring the game-winning goal late in the FA Cup against Premier League team Burnley at Turf Moor, making his team the first non-league team to advance to the competition’s quarterfinals in 103 years.

Many were impressed by his performance at Sincil Bank, and in 2017, Norwich City successfully enticed him away with a financial transfer. During his time at Carrow Road, he enjoyed loan moves with Lincoln, the Millers, and Portsmouth. In 2020, he joined the latter permanently and had a great four years on the South Coast.
