Rotherham united over power Derby county portsmouth for wigan man>

Rotherham are reportedly targeting Wigan Athletic attacker Callum Lang, but are set to face competition from League One sides Derby and Portsmouth

Leam Richardson, the former manager of Wigan Athletic, is eager to bring Lang to the New York stadium in order to strengthen his attacking lineup, according to Darren Witcoop’s report on X.

With just 24 goals in 27 league games, Richardson’s Millers are eight points from safety at the bottom of the Championship and have struggled offensively.

With 51 goals conceded, his team has the second-worst defence in the division—only Blackburn Rovers have more.

Lang is apparently being considered by many teams, including Rotherham, League One leaders Portsmouth, and promotion-chasing Derby County.

Since making the jump to the first team, Callum Lang has been a vital member of the Wigan club. He has made 143 appearances with the Latics, tallying 31 goals and dishing out 18 assists.

The 25-year-old has been a centre forward, a second striker, and a right winger for Wigan, among other positions.

The Englishman’s 2023–24 campaign for struggling Wigan has been quiet thus far. In League One, he has made 23 appearances, although he has only managed two goals and two assists.

Lang’s best season at Wigan was 2021/22, when he ended first in League One with 15 goals and seven assists as his team scored 82 goals overall.

The ineffective attacking play of Rotherham has contributed to their bottom-of-the-league standing. Only struggling teams QPR and Sheffield Wednesday have scored fewer goals than them in the division. They are in third place with the fewest goals scored.

Throughout the season, the South Yorkshire team has had trouble producing and scoring goals.

The top scorers for the Millers, Hakeem Odoffin and Jordan Hugill, have combined for just three goals, while Fred Onyadinma, who tied for second place, has returned to Luton following a two-goal loan period.

When it comes to providing opportunities, Onyadinma’s passing also causes issues. For Leam Richardson’s team, the winger contributed two assists, trailing only Cafu’s three.

Lang would fit right in with the Rotherham team and offer an alternative in the attack, giving them a chance to score from outside the area.

Wigan may want to cash in on Callum Lang in order to keep him from departing on a free transfer the following season, given that the striker is one of the struggling teams in League One and that his contract expires in the summer of 2025.

Given that Wigan doesn’t appear to be participating in the Championship very soon, Lang might be better off leaving the Latics.

He would sooner or later play Championship football if he moved to Rotherham. But it doesn’t seem like Leam Richardson’s team will be able to hang around in the division for very long.

If the Millers are relegated this season, Richardson would undoubtedly be thrilled to have Lang play for him once more, and the arrival of the Englishman would put them in a far stronger position for an early return to the Championship.

In a recent update on Lang’s status with the team, Wigan manager Shaun Maloney expressed his optimism that Lang would stick with the Latics.

Lang’s best course of action might be to wait for attention from Portsmouth and Derby, two League One teams vying for promotion, or he might stick with Wigan and hope for improvement the next season.
