Rotherham United could rewrite managerial shortlist as Tony Stewart takes his time appointing Matt Taylor’s replacement
Rotherham United chairman Tony Stewart has stated that he may need to redraw his shortlist following additional applications, meaning the club is still a long way from selecting a new manager two weeks after Matt Taylor was fired.
The international break between the 5-0 defeat at Watford which quickly brought Taylor’s dismissal and Friday’s 1-1 draw with Leeds United was an ideal opportunity to identify and appoint a new manager, but caretaker manager Wayne Carlisle took charge for that Yorkshire derby, and looks set to do so for Tuesday’s at Hull City.
Stewart said he did not have the support to deal with a high volume of applications with other interests eating into his time.
“I’ve been out of the country for a few days so we left it a while,” he said. “We’ve had a lot of people who’ve put their letters in the bag and we’ve got some good talent to look at.
“I promise you that we received calls and emails in a matter of hours. It had movement. The talented managers who were throwing their hats in the ring were actually rather nice.
“While some people had jobs, others did not. I was glad to see them come together.
“I didn’t really have the team to put in the effort because I knew I was leaving.” People have been able to enter the race, and I’m glad we’ve been able to take it slow and carefully. We are currently on the move.
“I think it will be all action next week. We’ve not seen anybody yet. We’ve shortlisted and we may have to shortlist again because the response that we’ve had has been incredible.
“We’ve had a look, we’ve had recruitment talking to certain individuals. We haven’t been stood still.”
Taylor ended Rotherham’s seven years of yo-yoing between the Championship and League One after taking over in October 2022.
But he was sacked with the Millers in the relegation zone without an away win for just over a year.
“When we got Neil Warnock in there were 16 games to go,” Stewart stated. Giving new management a chance is essential.
“With thirty games remaining and the current results, we had to make a breakthrough or fail. We had to consult the board before coming to a conclusion as a group.
“Matt was a perceptive and capable manager. You really do grow close to managers, which is why I feel so awful. But since I’m the club’s keeper, decisions must be made.”
