The full-back currently plies his trade for Portsmouth – and he played a part in taking them back to the Championship.
However, he has been released, with his contract at Fratton Park set to expire this summer.
The Millers have already moved quickly this summer, with Jonson Clarke-Harris already set to join on July 1st when his contract at Peterborough United comes to an end.
There had been speculation about Clarke-Harris’ future for some time and that potentially gave the Millers more time to prepare for a potential swoop for the striker.
Nonetheless, given the player’s value in League One, it wouldn’t have been shocking if the South Yorkshire team faced fierce competition for his services.
Rotherham, who have previously excelled in the second division, has managed to bring in this acquisition with great skill and have a manager in place.
After firing Leam Richardson in the latter half of the 2023–24 season, they made the decision to welcome Steve Evans back to the AESSEAL New York Stadium. As a result, they were able to get off to a strong start in the transfer window because they knew exactly the kind of players they needed to add to fit the manager’s philosophy.
They still have a lot of work ahead of them because there are other players.
They will need to examine their goalkeeping department and other areas more closely now that Viktor Johansson’s contract is about to expire.
Rotherham United set to swoop for Joe Rafferty
Given that Rafferty played a significant role in the 2023–2024 season, it wouldn’t have been shocking if Pompey had decided to hold onto him for an additional season.
He will depart Fratton Park with the best wishes of the supporters, having helped lead them to promotion. It appears he will be taken up very soon.
Nixon thinks the Millers will win the “race” for the 30-year-old, and Rotherham will close a deal for the former Preston North End player.
Rafferty was rumored to be in the running for a number of teams, but it appears he has chosen to join Evans’ squad.
Rotherham United have made a bright start to the summer
Despite the fact that Clarke-Harris and Rafferty aren’t exactly rookies—some may say that Rotherham isn’t planning too far ahead—both players have the potential to be excellent medium-term additions.
Clarke-Harris has the potential to be one of the top scorers in the third division if he is given enough playing time.
Additionally, he might be the one to lead the Millers back to the second division if he continues to play well in the Championship with Peterborough in 2021–2022.
Rafferty might be a valuable player on a multi-year contract given he has second-tier experience under his belt.
Although there is still work to be done in the upcoming months, the Millers have made good progress in the first
