George Byers, a former midfielder for the Blues, is expected to join forces with Joe Rafferty, another former Pompey star, following rumours that the former was being targeted by Rotherham United, a future League One outfit.
This week, Rotherham has already brought in three players, one of which is soon-to-be Rafferty, a defender who was just released from Fratton Park and will shortly leave Pompey. But it seems like The Millers have not yet wrapped up their summer transfer business. In a few weeks, another former Blue will become a free agent, and The Millers will be eager to sign him.
In August 2021, Byers signed a two-year contract with Sheffield Wednesday, a League One team. After the team was promoted back to the Championship, Byers’ contract included an option for him to stay with the team. The midfield player then moved on loan to Blackpool in February 2024, and it was announced earlier this month that he will be released by the Championship team after his contract expired.
However, it doesn’t appear that he will be without a contract for very long. Sports reporter Darren Witcoop stated on X (previously Twitter) that “Rotherham backing Steve Evans as they eye another instant promotion next season.” Desire George Byers and Reece James of Sheffield Wednesday, as well as Derby midfielder Louie Sibley and free agent Jordan Williams.
After being acquired from Swansea in January 2021 by former manager Kenny Jackett, Byers spent six months on loan at Fratton Park. Though the 27-year-old struggled to make an impression and the Blues missed out on the League One play-offs on the last day of the season, the move was initially viewed as something of a coup.
He made a total of 15 appearances at Fratton Park, only four of which were starts, and he only contributed one assist when he was on the south coast. Consequently, it was not shocking when Danny Cowley, Jackett’s replacement that season, ordered Byers back to South Wales with no word of a possible long-term relocation.
