Motorist urge to use alternative routes as Road in Royton closed after huge sinkhole appears in middle of carriageway

Rochdale Road in Royton has been shut in both directions after the crater appeared this morning.

It’s believed to have been caused by a collapsed sewer, and a spokesman for Oldham Council says United Utilities are investigating.

One resident said police started cordoning off the road at about 9am.

He added: “My wife was just setting off to work and she rang me to tell me about it.

“The hole is huge and it looks like the road will be closed off for a while.”

A photo shared by GMP Royton and Shaw on social media shows the giant hole, which appears to be at least the size of a large car.

Oldham Council is urging motorists to avoid the area and says that diversions have been put in place.

They said: “Rochdale Road (A671), in Royton – near to the Halfway House pub – has been closed in both directions after the carriageway subsided. We are advising drivers to avoid the area.

“Diversions are in place via Shaw Road, Royton; Crompton Way and Rochdale Road, Shaw; and Broad Lane, Rochdale.“Council workers and United Utilities staff are on site assessing the damage and more information will be made available when we have it.”

It comes just after parts of Oldham and Royton were hit by flooding after a month’s worth of rain fell in just several hours on Monday.
