Reporter Alan Nixon stated on his Patreon that Sheffield United is considering a January deal for Southampton right-back James Bree.
When the January transfer window opens, Sheffield United will likely be looking to add more players as they continue their pursuit of promotion.
There hasn’t been a better season so far for Chris Wilder and company. As we approach the midway point, they lead the Championship table, but Leeds United, Burnley, and Sunderland are among the teams vying for their spot.
The Blades do need to improve in a few areas when the winter window rolls around, despite their impressive play and excellent form. As next month draws closer, a fresh connection has surfaced.
Reporter Alan Nixon claims that Sheffield United is considering a number of players, including Southampton defender James Bree.
Since the Saints were promoted from the Championship to the Premier League, Bree has struggled to get playing time, and a winter transfer may be in the works. This season, the 27-year-old has only made three appearances in the league, mostly as an unutilised substitute but also occasionally left out of the starting lineup entirely.
Bree has scored twice in three Carabao Cup games while playing as a right-back and a left-back.
A necessary addition?
Bree would undoubtedly be an outstanding addition to Sheffield United’s roster as the Blades look to add both quality and depth during the transfer season. He has expertise, is adaptable, and has previously shown himself to be successful in the Championship.
However, given that his main role is right-back, some will debate whether Bree is actually needed at Bramall Lane.
Although he has plenty of competition for the starting position and plenty of cover, Alfie Gilchrist has been the go-to right-back while on loan from Chelsea. The versatile Jamie Shackleton can step in, and Wilder has also depended on academy graduate Femi Seriki when necessary.
The latter will only gain from his current opportunities, but a move for someone like Bree might cause that to change. Even though his circumstances make him a viable addition, the club will need to carefully consider this move.
Other recruitment focuses
As previously mentioned, Sheffield United and Wilder may try to sign players at a variety of positions, with depth being crucial throughout the demanding Championship season.
But increasing the options in midfield and further up the pitch appears to be the main priority.
It would not hurt to have a versatile attacker who can play both up top and out on the flank, and several players who fit that description have been linked. Given that Ollie Arblaster will be out for some time, it is also anticipated that a midfield player would be signed in January.
When the window opens, the Blades will be able to start to work quickly because targets will already be on the radar.
