Blades man labelled ‘an absolute disaster’

Iliman Ndiaye has scored once in 24 appearances since joining Marseille from Sheffield United

After struggling with form this season, Iliman Ndiaye’s time at Marseille has been called “an absolute disaster.” After deciding not to join the Blades in the Premier League, Ndiaye moved from Sheffield United to Marseille in the summer for a rumoured £20 million transfer.

But with form being hard to come by, he has failed to live up to the standards he set at Bramall Lane in the south of France. The attacker has only scored once in 24 games across all competitions, but he has three assists. The French press has begun to single him out for his play.

The most recent criticism follows Marseille’s loss to Olympique Lyon, a struggling team in Ligue 1, 1-0, over the weekend. It was Ndiaye’s first game back after the Africa Cup of Nations. He began the match on the right flank, but in the 59th minute, Faris Moumbagna, a recent arrival, took his spot because Gennaro Gattuso’s team was behind.

The French commentator Giovanni Castaldi stated, “The recruitment had potential, but nothing is confirmed.” “[Joaquin] Correa is a ghost, Ndiaye’s best move was to do keepie-uppies in front of the Gare Saint-Charles, but on the pitch, he’s an absolute disaster.”

During the January transfer window, Ndiaye was linked to a return to England, with Crystal Palace reportedly eager to get the former Blade into the Premier League to help them fight relegation. The Senegal international, though, never saw a move come through. Now, after a difficult draw against Shaktar Donetsk, he will be looking to establish some consistency, aid Marseille in moving up the league table, and advance to the Europa League knockout stages.

The 23-year-old was instrumental in the Blades’ promotion to the Premier League last season, scoring 14 goals for the team in the Championship.
