Chris Wilder says Blades facing late injury on ‘two to three’ players’

Chris Wilder says he will have to make a late decision on the fitness of “two or three players” ahead of Sunday’s Premier League game at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Although Ben Brereton Diaz and Oli McBurnie were rumoured to be close to returning to their homes against Brighton and Hove Albion seven days prior, the Blades manager was keeping his cards close to his chest.

“I won’t reveal anything; the game is challenging enough without revealing our business to others,” he declared.

“With two or three players, there has been improvement, in my opinion. We’ll have to wait and see if they can participate on Sunday afternoon; we won’t know until the last minute.

“It’s not a great situation to be in at the moment.

“We felt is if we’ve taken a couple of steps forward and some big ones backwards.

“To be at our best we need consistency, continuity and to be able to work on the training ground with those players and when you can’t, it makes life a little bit more difficult for you.”

After recuperating from a concussion, Wilder started custodian Ivo Grbic on the bench during last week’s 5-0 Premier League loss to Brighton.

Wilder stated that Grbic would be his first choice when the Croatian signed in January, but he stuck with Wes Foderingham last week, only to watch as the third-place team let five goals in three games.

Just “It’s a decision,” was all that Wilder would say. “I have made that decision.”

Wilder had stated seven days prior that Daniel Jebbison would return in another week and George Baldock would arrive in ten to fourteen days. It was stated that Tom Davies would not be ready to begin for a few weeks.

Mason Holgate’s red card against Brighton resulted in a suspension.

Chris Basham and John Egan are still listed as long-term injured.

“A timeline does not exist,” stated Wilder. “John will have performed really well if he returns by the end of the season, but his mindset is pushing for that. “Basham and our medical staff are focusing on his return to a normal life, but that is still a long way off.”
