Coventry star speaks out on alleged racist abuse as Sheffield Wednesday release shocking statement’

Sheffield Wednesday and Coventry City have condemned the alleged racist abuse aimed at Kasey Palmer during the Championship clash at Hillsborough

Kasey Palmer of Coventry City has come out after reportedly being racially harassed at Sheffield Wednesday.

The incident, captured on TV, involved a fan apparently making a monkey sign during the second half of the Sky Blues’ 2-1 victory over the Owls at Hillsborough. Palmer, 27, was visibly unhappy and made referee Anthony Backhouse and his teammates aware. Following the match, Wednesday confirmed that anyone “found culpable” would face the “strictest possible sanctions”

Following statements of condemnation by both clubs, Palmer took to X (formerly Twitter) to post: “Disappointed to even have to come on here and write this. Racism is a disgrace…it has no place in the world, let alone football.

“I am black and proud, and I am training my three children to be the same. To be honest, it feels as if nothing will change no matter how hard we try. A couple of fans chanting monkeys does not define a fan base; I am grateful for all of the love and support I have gotten.

Doug King, Coventry’s owner, stated, “We fully condemn the vitriol directed towards Kasey today and will continue to support him following this incident. There is no place for this in football or society, and we urge Sheffield Wednesday and the authorities to take the toughest possible measures.”

Meanwhile, Coventry boss Mark Robins said after the game: “Obviously there has been a ridiculous few people that have decided to do whatever they’ve done. They’ve made some racist remarks or comments and that should be dealt with.

“Hopefully, they’ll catch it on camera and deal with them. There’s simply no place for it. It is ludicrous in this day and age. “Just grow up.”

Wednesday chairman Dejphon Chansiri added: “We absolutely condemn the abuse reported by Kasey Palmer today and, like Coventry, believe that such appalling behaviour has no place in football or society.”

Wednesday’s statement read: “Sheffield Wednesday and Coventry City are shocked and saddened by the racist gesture from the stands reported by Sky Blues player Kasey Palmer during today’s game at Hillsborough.

“Both clubs strongly condemn any forms of discrimination and abuse, emphasising that there is no place for such behaviour in football or in our larger community. We will collaborate with the appropriate authorities, and anyone found to be responsible will face the harshest possible punishment from both Sheffield Wednesday and the law.

“We stand shoulder to shoulder with Coventry City and the football world in stamping out this abhorrent and wholly unacceptable behaviour.”

The incident occurred on the same day as AC Milan walked off the pitch against Udinese because keeper Mike Maignan was attacked with racist abuse by the crowd.
