Forget Djed Spence, Leeds United should swoop for cut-price Sheffield United deal’

Jayden Bogle could be a good addition for Leeds United this month after they cut Djed Spence’s loan from Spurs short.

They have yet to sign anyone, nor have they sold or loaned anyone; nevertheless, the Whites have decided to cancel the loan deal of the right-back, who joined from Spurs on a season-long loan in August.

Even though Leeds manager Daniel Farke has stated that there was nothing catastrophic that caused Spence’s departure from Elland Road, he has hinted that the defender did not match the team’s professionalism standards this season.

Speaking to The Yorkshire Evening Post, he said: “Listen, we came here in the summer to create and bring new values and a new culture within the club, and when we talk about a player, whether he’s on a permanent or loan deal, we have expectations, and these expectations are important in several areas.

“Obviously, the player’s potential and quality are important, but so are his professionalism, discipline, workload on and off the pitch, and soft skills, as well as whether he’s positive and committed, good for the group, and engaged with these topics.

“And we decided okay, this is the player we want in our group and want to represent Leeds United, our demands are very, very high and we don’t differ between loan players, permanent players so we are pretty picky in this topic.”

Djed Spence’s loan move to Leeds

Spence arrived in West Yorkshire with high expectations, since he appeared to be the club’s best right-back on paper, and Leeds fans expected him to make more of an impact than his seven appearances. Unfortunately, Spence’s injury came at a horrible moment.

He barely played about 10 minutes of football in the early part of the season, and while Luke Ayling, Sam Byram, and Jamie Shackleton are all capable of playing right-back, none have the skill Spence has demonstrated at this level before with Forest. Leeds have also struggled at right-back this season.

The 23-year-old would start for practically every team in the league and is a significant improvement in terms of quality and speed over Leeds’ current alternatives. The Whites have forced to use Archie Grey as a right-back this season, despite the fact that he is a centre midfielder and is just in his first professional season at the age of 17.

Spence’s knee injury kept him out for 10 weeks, and he hasn’t looked sharp since his return, despite the fact that he is faster and more physical than Grey, implying that his recovery time could have been more optimal tactically, with pace a particular area of concern in Leeds’ backline.

Grey and others have done reasonably well there, but Spence had the ability to make the position his own and change the dynamic on Leeds’ right flank, and his departure will leave fans wondering what may have been.
