Leicester keeper Danny Ward to Bramall Lane after Welshman fell out’

Sheffield United have asked about signing Leicester City goalkeeper Danny Ward as boss Chris Wilder looks to add competition in between the sticks.

Ward has found himself well out of favour under Foxes boss Enzo Maresca in the Championship this season – with both Mads Hermansen and Jakub Stolarczyk ahead of him in the pecking order.

Ward will be hoping for regular football this season in case Wales manage to qualify for Euro 2024 – and he would have a chance of competing with current Blades No 1 Wes Foderingham.

The Blades had previously attempted to sign Anderlecht custodian Kasper Schmeichel, 37, as he tries to return to the Premier League.

The custodian departed England to join Nice in August 2022 after failing to agree to extend his £120,000-per-week contract with Leicester City.

It would mark the end of his 11-year stay at the football club, with Schmeichel playing for just a single season with Nice before joining Anderlecht in September, 2023.

His contract with Anderlecht will expire in the Summer, with the goalkeeper having kept two clean sheets in 13 appearances for Anderlecht.

Sheffield United have already completed a huge signing this month, acquiring Ben Brereton-Diaz on loan from Villarreal.

The former Blackburn player only joined the LaLiga club in the summer and found game time difficult to come by.

Blades manager Chris Wilder, who has made his first signing since taking over his second tenure last month, told the club’s official website: ‘He’s quick, powerful, and his recent goal record at Blackburn speaks for itself.

‘He has also had a lot of international experience, having represented Chile in recent years.

‘For me, the fact that he wanted to come here and play in the Premier League was a major element.

‘I didn’t have to speak much about Sheffield United since he already knows everything about us; he did his research and loved what he heard and what we had to say to him.’
