Liverpool VAR decision:Premier League referees disagree over call angered

Liverpool defeated Sheffield United 2-0 at Bramall Lane on Wednesday night

Ex-Premier League referees Dermot Gallagher and Keith Hackett have disagreed over the decision to award Liverpool’s second goal in Wednesday’s 2-0 victory at Sheffield United.

The Reds picked up all three points at Bramall Lane as Virgil van Dijk thumped in the opening goal from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s corner before Dominik Szoboszlai sealed the win as he hammered past Wes Foderingham in second-half stoppage time.

Nunez presented the Hungarian with the cross, but his challenge on Jayden Bogle proved contentious. After losing possession, Nunez attempted to get it back, placing his leading foot on the ball but bringing his trailing leg through the back of the Blades defender, knocking him to the ground.

Hackett expressed his amazement at the decision on social media, writing, “I am bemused that ref [Simon] Hooper and VAR [Michael] Oliver judged that this [Nunez tackle on Bogle] was not a foul.” In law, this is completely incorrect.” Gallagher, however, felt the challenge was not a foul, as did on-field referee Simon Hooper and VAR Michael Oliver.

“Nunez has quite clearly won the ball,” he told Sky Sports ref watch. He gets the entire ball and does so before making contact with Bogle. If that was a Sheffield United player entering the penalty area and making a tackle like that, you wouldn’t expect a penalty to be awarded to him.

“I believe it’s a tackle; the referee sees it clearly, and it was later reviewed by the VAR.” Nunez definitely receives the ball first, comes away, and Bogle jumps over him, so it’s not a foul in my opinion.”
