Luton boss Rob Edwards took aim at the officials after VAR stepped in to award two penalties for handball in their loss to Sheffield United — including one to the Hatters.
First, VAR Paul Tierney sent referee Chris Kavanagh to his pitchside monitor after Luton’s Reece Burke struck the ball with a flailing arm at a corner.
Kavanagh awarded a penalty, which James McAtee scored, then history repeated itself in the second half.
This time it was United and Vini Souza being punished for an alleged handball — Carlton Morris scoring the spot-kick on the way to a 3-1 defeat — but Edwards admitted the decision that fell in his side’s favour was wrong.
‘We dominated massive spells but got punished with a 2-0 loss. I’m taking the penalties out of it,’ said the Luton boss.
‘Neither were penalties, ours or theirs. I don’t know what a penalty is any more.
‘It’s a little bit strange, once they had theirs we appealed for ours.
‘It’s not the referee’s fault, he was told to go and look at it.’
