New club development: Angle that best suits the fans’

A recent club update from Sheffield Wednesday has generated an angry reaction among some fans.

Sheffield Wednesday recently claimed that the club had entered into’strategic partnerships’ to bring a brand new, cutting-edge Esports gaming arena to the club’s famous Hillsborough stadium.

Many people were left wondering how the club was able to buy this new gaming arena yet first-team manager Danny Rohl had little to no resources for the transfer window.

But, putting such concerns to rest, journalist Joe Crann outlined how this new Esports setup has been in the works for a long, how it will really generate income for the club, and how it has nothing to do with the team’s transfer budget.

Based on Crann’s appraisal of the new initiative, it appears to be a net positive for the club.

But fans may have had no idea what the arena will actually bring to the club and how it’s being funded, and given what’s been such a dismal six months or so in terms of funding and so on, anger may have been the reasonable reaction.

Xisco Munoz oversaw a couple of paid acquisitions in the summer in Anthony Musaba and Djeidi Gassama, but they only cost a combined total of roughly £1.3 million, which is just insufficient for a promoted squad to contend.

And we’ve seen signs of it with Wednesday hovering near the bottom of the table for the first half of the season.

But there is new hope, with Dejphon Chansiri assembling a strong-looking backroom team to support Rohl and completing a couple of decent acquisitions this month.

Much more work still to be done, but there are some encouraging indicators at Sheffield Wednesday.

The Owls face Coventry City in the Championship this weekend.
