Pundit insists former Blades “had”‘ to leave Coventry for Sheffield United

Hamer was thrown straight into action in August in an away trip to Nottingham Forest, and he announced his arrival to the top flight of England with aplomb, scoring a stunning debut goal in a 1-1 draw

He has only scored once more for the Blades, in a 2-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur, and he is clearly finding the transition to the Premier League in a failing club difficult.

United were deemed favourites for relegation after losing both Sander Berge and Iliman Ndiaye over the summer, despite the arrival of Cameron Archer, and unless Chris Wilder can turn things around, Hamer’s time in the Premier League will be cut short.

Goodman: Hamer will have no regrets over Blades transfer

According to Sky Sports commentator Don Goodman, despite his new club’s struggles in the Premier League and the possibility of relegation to the Championship in 2024, Hamer will not regret moving from Coventry to the Blades over a more stable top flight club in England or Europe.

He had no choice but to make the move financially. Because the money he is on now, compared to what he was on at Coventry, will change his life. So, on a personal level, he won’t have any regrets,” Goodman added.

“On the football pitch, yes.” Sheffield United were always going to be one of the few teams fighting relegation at the bottom of the table. Hamer was one of the few players on whom they could spend money.

They lost their best player, (Iliman) Ndiaye, as well as Sander Berge. Without the funds to replace them, it was easy to foresee that they would end up where they are now.

“Unless Chris Wilder brings in eight or ten new players (in January), they will finish where they are.” It makes no difference where they finish.

“I feel a pang of sympathy for Paul Heckingbottom.” Nobody can manage in the Premier League when their hands are tied behind their backs. Nobody, not even Pep Guardiola.

“On a personal level, Gus Hamer will have no regrets about raising his family. On a football level, he most likely regrets his decision to join Sheffield United.”
