Sheffield United make loan decision as £12.5m ex-Liverpool man becomes Blades ‘target’

Chris Wilder is looking to add to his squad as Sheffield United battle against Premier League relegation

Sheffield United are allegedly looking to recruit Leicester City custodian Danny Ward this month. The Blades are expected to explore for a new custodian in January as they seek to enhance their chances of avoiding Premier League relegation.

Kasper Schmeichel, formerly of Leicester, has been repeatedly linked with a move to Bramall Lane in recent weeks and might be a possibility for the club. However, according to Sky Sports, United are interested in Ward, who might prove to be a cheaper option for the team.

Ward has not played a minute of first-team football this season under Foxes manager Enzo Maresca, having fallen behind Mads Hermansen in the King Power Stadium pecking order. As a result, the Wales international could become available this month, and Wilder is thought to be interested in adding him to his team to compete for the number one slot with Wes Foderingham.

According to Alan Nixon, the Blades look to be planning to shorten Luke Thomas’ stay at the club in order to enable the transition. Thomas is currently on loan from Leicester and has struggled to find work since Wilder took over as manager last month, replacing Paul Heckingbottom.

As a result, in order to free up the loan space required to sign Ward, the club may consider sending him back to Leicestershire. Thomas has been with the Blades since the start of the Premier League season, making 12 league appearances, the most recent in the FA Cup against Gillingham.

Ward, on the other hand, has been a Leicester player since completing his £12.5m switch from Liverpool back in 2018. The goalkeeper has made 27 league appearances in that time for the Foxes. He took in spells with Wrexham, Tamworth, Morecambe, Aberdeen and Huddersfield Town earlier in his career.
