Sheffield Wednesday’s £10m transfer mistake reminder Blackpool

Striker Jordan Rhodes has rediscovered his form during his loan spell at Blackpool this season

Supporters are furious due to the contentious dismissal of promotion-winning manager Darren Moore, exorbitant ticket costs, and Chansiri’s lack of activity during the summer transfer window.

After being promoted, 12 players joined the team this summer, but many of them haven’t quite been able to contribute.

Wednesday have been no stranger to making mistakes in the transfer market during Chansiri’s reign, and the recent form of striker Jordan Rhodes at Blackpool has been a reminder of one of the club’s biggest errors.

Jordan Rhodes’ Blackpool form is a reminder of Sheffield Wednesday’s transfer mistake

Rhodes came to Hillsborough originally on loan from Middlesbrough in February 2017, but he made the transfer permanent for an alleged £10 million that summer. Wednesday supporters had long pushed the team to sign Rhodes.

Given his stellar goal scoring record with teams like Boro, Blackburn Rovers, and Huddersfield Town, Rhodes was a signing that the Owls should have been happy with. However, things did not work out for Rhodes at Hillsborough, and after losing favour with Jos Luhukay, he spent the 2018–19 season on loan with Norwich City.

He had a great run at Carrow Road, leading the Canaries to the Championship title, but upon his return, he found it difficult to get back into the Owls lineup.

After the team was relegated to League One, Rhodes had a brief comeback under Moore towards the end of the 2020–21 season. However, he left the team on Wednesday in May 2021, having only scored 20 goals and dishing out five assists in 112 appearances.
