Statement released as Blades overpower Sunderland target amid ‘£7m offer’ confirm

The striker is rumoured to have received a formal offer from Sheffield United.
In response to Sheffield United’s increasing interest, Leicester City has confirmed that they would recall Tom Cannon from his loan at Stoke.

After scoring 11 goals in 25 games at Stoke, Cannon became a January target for other Championship clubs, sparking more speculation over his future. Throughout the summer, United had their eye on the 22-year-old, but he slipped out of their grasp while a takeover drama continued.

Now that the takeover is finalised, interest in Cannon has increased moving into January, with teams like Sunderland and West Brom reportedly showing interest. Football Insider revealed earlier this week that Bramall Lane officials had submitted a “formal” £7 million bid, and Cannon’s parent club, Leicester, has now formally announced their intention to shorten their loanee’s stay in Stoke.

“Striker Tom Cannon has returned to Leicester City after being recalled from his loan spell with Sky Bet Championship side Stoke City,” a statement issued Wednesday morning stated. During his tenure at the Bet 365 Stadium, the 22-year-old Republic of Ireland international scored 11 goals in 25 games for the Potters, including four goals in a 6-1 victory over Portsmouth.

That development will only add fuel to the fire as reports of Championship-wide interest continue to emerge. Cannon was settled at the Bet 365 Stadium and so his recall would suggest another move is in the pipeline. Foxes manager Ruud van Nistelrooy admitted earlier this week a decision needed to be made on the Republic of Ireland international.

Before his team’s Premier League matchup against Crystal Palace, he said, “He’s one on the list for us.” We closely monitor him. Tom’s circumstances are carefully examined. On that, decisions need to be made. There’s still a chance [he remains at Stoke]. However, we’re considering what’s best for the club and for his circumstances.

There is no mention of what Leicester plan to do with Cannon in the statement, but multiple reports have suggested they are open to a sale, so long as they can recoup the £7m they paid Everton for him back in 2023. And if reports of a bid worth that amount from United are to be true, then it might have proven the catalyst for his recall.

The club’s pursuit of Ben Brereton Diaz is believed to be unaffected by interest in Cannon, as Blades manager Chris Wilder is known to be eager to recruit a striker this month. The Chilean international, who played in South Yorkshire for the second half of the previous season, is viewed as a winger by Bramall Lane management.
