Blades boss’s warning to out-of-contract stars*

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder acknowledged the “difficult” position his injury has presented, but the team is still confident that captain John Egan can return to action before the current season concludes. The Republic of Ireland international, whose contract expires in the summer, has not played since hobbling off against West Ham at the end of September.

In recent weeks, Egan and fellow injured defender Chris Basham have been more visible at Shirecliffe, where their absences are greatly felt as they continue their recovery routines. United has given up 65 goals at the 25-game point, more than any other club in Premier League history. Their third straight five-goal home loss came against Brighton this past weekend.
