Sheffield United hoping to make further squad additions in final fortnight of January transfer window

Chris Wilder has detailed the qualities he hopes to add to his Sheffield United squad as the final fortnight of what could be a crunch January window approaches. The Blades have so far made one addition this month, the loan signing of Ben Brereton Diaz from Villareal.

While the Blades entered the winter break at the bottom of the Premier League, there was still hope that they could defy the odds and avoid an immediate return to the Championship. One piece of the puzzle that Wilder hopes will bring survival this season is the Chile international. Prior to Sunday’s home match against West Ham, the returning manager and his coaching staff have enjoyed some much-needed time on the training pitch during a two-week period that Wilder considered crucial to their season. However, the manager is still hopeful of some quality additions for the second half of the season.

It is well known that United was looking for a new goalkeeper to challenge Wes Foderingham for the No. 1 shirt. Wilder was also rumoured to have been considering a new center-half before media reports caused some anxiety among United supporters regarding the short-term future of defender Anel Ahmedhodzic. Although Oliver Arblaster’s and former Everton player Tom Davies’s impending returns from injuries are expected to provide two more options in the middle of the park, midfield is still a factor to be taken into account.

When asked which qualities he is prioritising in his transfer hunt, Wilder said, “Everything.” From a physical standpoint, we need some strong players who can play 20 games given the current state of the Premier League. I think our play needs a certain physicality. To improve, we need new members with experience and fresh perspectives to join the group.
