Report: Sheffield United battles Leeds to win race for ‘huge talent’ in January

Automatic promotion may not be the only thing Sheffield United and Leeds United are fighting for in January.

The two Yorkshire sides currently occupy the top two spots in the Championship and could be looking for reinforcements next month to strengthen their climb to the Premier League.

Despite sitting top of the table, Chris Wilder believes his Blades side are still a long way from being guaranteed promotion, meaning it is almost certain they make signings.

Sheffield United’s imminent takeover is also likely to strengthen their hand, and while many view Leeds as having the strongest squad in the league, they can’t afford to be left behind. A goalkeeper, a number 10 and a striker are all positions that could be strengthened at Elland Road and choosing to do nothing would see Leeds facing the play-offs again in May.

Sheffield United to face Leeds for Louis Barry
Sheffield United and Leeds pursued many of the same targets over the summer and are likely to look to similar markets again.

A couple of examples include both Callum O’Hare and Jesurun Rak-Sakyi opting for a move to Bramall Lane over Leeds, though Jayden Bogle did make the move across Yorkshire.

And now according to the Sheffield Star, the two clubs could be about to do battle again as Sheffield United join the race for Louie Barry. Leeds had already been in contact with Barry ahead of the transfer window, which was due to open in just two weeks, as there was a possibility of an early recall for the midfielder, who is on loan at Aston Villa from Stockport County.

Barry has had impressive numbers this season, scoring 14 goals in 20 League One appearances, and Villa are eager to send him to a more senior club. Sunderland, Middlesbrough and Burnley have also been mentioned as possible destinations for the former Barcelona youth player.

Leeds are clearly in need of a No.9 in January but Barry, who is more comfortable playing on the left wing, doesn’t entirely fit that description.

But that hasn’t stopped former Leeds midfielder Carlton Palmer from urging his former club to sign a loan player he considers “outstanding”.

He said: “He’s found his feet at Stockport last season and this season, where he’s done terrifically well. He’s a huge talent…

“The one thing Villa will be concerned about if they recall him from Stockport and send him out to a Championship side, they would not want him to be sat on the bench so Leeds would have to convince them he’s going to play week-in, week-out. “Because it has not been played at this level, it is a big bet on Leeds at the moment. Perhaps if they can get a loan for permanent decisions, they can search for it in the future. It will be a bit of a business because there is a great future before.

Marcelo Bielsa changed Leeds United, and when the Argentinans arrived in Eland Road in the summer of 2018, they were of course related to the club. Three and a half years later, Bielsa left Leeds as one of the club’s greatest legends, having led the club to promotion to the Premier League and immediately finishing ninth in the top flight. Vielsa showed a dream to Leeds fans. Her unbelievable theater brought the best team of the Ries team under the old manager of Marseille in Argentina, Reel, and Athletic Bilbao. The biggest part of Biels’s work is his ability to persuade his player’s best players. We enjoyed the best fun, such as Kalvin Phillips, Luke Ailing, MateUSH KLICH, and Patrick Bamford.
