Sheffield United beat Burnley and Sunderland in race to sign 24-year-old

Sheffield United have agreed a deal to sign FC Basel winger Liam Millar as per Adam Oxley.

They were joined by Burnley in their relegation and both clubs will join Sunderland and Preston North End who spent last season in the second tier.

Millar, 24, spent last season on loan at Deepdale. He played 35 Championship games for Preston North End and scored five, whilst assisting another five.

The former Liverpool youth player made a permanent switch to Switzerland in 2021 but has really failed to build any sort of consistency at Basel.

Sheffield United, Burnley, Sunderland and Preston North End were all linked with a permanent deal this summer. However, it seems like it is the Blades who have won this race and Millar will make the move to Bramall Lane upon the completion of the Copa America.

A solid signing

Millar impressed whilst at Deepdale last season and it was no surprise to see the initial links suggesting a move back to the Championship was on the cards this summer.

Throughout his career, the adaptable attacker has mostly been used on the left, although he can play anywhere in the front three.

He could do with settling down at a new club as it was evident in recent times his future didn’t really lie with Basel. Sheffield United will provide him with an opportunity to do that. The Canadian international is currently with them at the Copa America. He played in their opening 2-0 defeat against Argentina last night.

All fighting for the same thing

All four of the second tier clubs reportedly interested in Millar all have hopes of achieving the same thing.

The Blades and the Clarets will be looking for an immediate return to the Premier League with a top six finish the absolute minimum.

Whereas Sunderland will be hoping to build on their dismal bottom half finish last season and kick towards the top six again, whilst Preston North End will be hoping to do the same.

Missing out on Millar will be a blow for them, but the summer window is still only a week old and there’s plenty of time for them to turn to other options and reinforce their squad in other ways.
