Here, FLW writers discuss Sheffield United’s decision to enter the competition for Sammie Szmodics of Blackburn Rovers.
According to The Sun, recently demoted Sheffield United has entered the competition for Blackburn Rovers player Sammie Szmodics.
Sammie Szmodics has performed exceptionally well in this 2023–24 Championship season, whereas Blackburn Rovers have struggled.
The attacker is having his greatest season to date, and the Lancashire team could be in much worse shape right now if it weren’t for Szmodics’ remarkable goal total.
Blackburn needs to overcome a few obstacles before the final game of the season, so they’ll be hoping that Szmodics can step up to the plate once again in what could be his final game for
The 25-goal striker has drawn interest from Luton Town and Brentford, and this latest rumour suggests that both teams are still interested in Szmodics.
The 28-year-old has also been linked to Scottish Premiership squad Celtic and fellow Premier League team Fulham, although the Glasgow club may find it difficult to pursue a move given their financial situation in comparison to the other teams.
But Sheffield United has also entered the race as well. According to The Sun, Blackburn is reportedly seeking to pay between £15 and £20 million for Szmodics, and the Blades are fans of the player even if they were demoted to the Championship.
Thus, we at Football League World have questioned some of the authors for their opinions on the situation and if Szmodics should hold out for Premier League interest as the news breaks that Sheffield United has added themselves to the list of teams interested in Sammie Szmodics.
They stated the following.
Worthington, Brett
Although it has taken him some time to establish himself as a great Championship player, Sammie Szmodics is clearly performing at a very high level this season.
Given the 28-year-old’s incredible accomplishment of scoring 25 Championship goals in a Blackburn Rovers squad that has struggled at the foot of the table, it is not surprising that teams are showing interest in him.
Due to Szmodics’ demonstrated ability as a finisher at this level, all teams, including those who are currently in the Championship and those who have been demoted, will be considering adding him to their roster for the upcoming season.
Szmodics is expected to depart Ewood Park at the end of the current campaign, but he shouldn’t make a snap choice to sign with a different Championship squad.
It is true that he would be a member of a team that competes at the highest level of the Championship if he joined the Blades, but Premier League teams are not often linked to players.
Szmodics must therefore exercise patience, wait his turn in summer, and seek to sign with a Premier League outfit. Although he has never played at that level before, he might easily resume his excellent play in a division above if he joins the right side.
The player may only have this one chance to seize it, and considering how well he’s performed, he probably has better options than to sign with Sheffield United.
Szmodics’ season has exceeded everyone’s expectations, and with his 29th birthday coming up in September, now is the ideal moment for him to look for a Premier League transfer.
Though Szmodics is a highly specialised player who excels when positioned as the number 10 or playing off of a central striker, many Premier League teams that would be in the running for him do not use that role, there is always the chance that this is just a one-season wonder.
It’s understandable why Sheffield United is searching, though, as Chris Wilder’s preferred 3-5-2 formation would theoretically see Szmodics playing off a bigger number nine. The Blades have a lot of holes at the top of the pitch to fill, with Cameron Archer returning to Aston Villa as part of the deal that was struck last summer, Oli McBurnie out of contract, and Ben Brereton Diaz returning to Villarreal.
Though it is difficult to see United investing at least £15 million on a player while still in the second division, they will probably not be able to fund a deal for Szmodics because they are not expected to make that much money on sellable assets this summer.
Szmodics has a higher chance of becoming a Premier League player for the first time in 2025 if he moves to Bramall Lane for a sizable quantity of money this summer. However, he might as well wait for a Premier League transfer altogether should interest arise.
