Blues are hoping to lure Luke Ayling to St Andrew’s, but may need to be in the Championship to do that.
Birmingham City are eyeing a deal for Leeds United’s Luke Ayling. The full-back is also garnering interest from Sheffield United. A few roadblocks might prevent Birmingham from recruiting the defence, including a probable relegation.
The Sun reports that Birmingham City has entered the market to recruit Luke Ayling, defender for Leeds United.
According to The Sun, Birmingham City has made an attempt to sign Leeds United defender Luke Ayling.
There is a great deal of pressure on this game against the Canaries since only a win will get Blues out of the drop zone on the last day, barring Plymouth from suffering a crushing loss.
With some excellent players currently in the team and owner Wagner maybe planning to dip into his wallet once more this summer to make sure his team is as strong as possible, they could be in for an interesting future if they can survive in their present division.
Birmingham City eyeing Luke Ayling
One man who could be set to arrive this summer is Ayling, who is out of contract at Leeds this summer and looks set to leave Elland Road on the expiration of his deal.
Having been loaned out to Middlesbrough in January, it seems inevitable that Leeds boss Daniel Farke won’t keep him at the club beyond the end of his contract.
That would give other sides the opportunity to get a deal over the line for the 32-year-old, who still has plenty to offer at this level.
The Sun believes Sheffield United are also keen on Ayling, so Birmingham look set to face a real battle to secure the signature of Ayling if they do stay up, with key recruitment figure Craig Gardner (pictured above) having a tough task on his hands
Birmingham City may find it difficult to recruit Luke Ayling
The Blues are an aspirational team, and Wagner seems to be a dedicated owner who will provide the money required to sign some elite players.
Ayling is expected to be a free agent, so a move might be within budget, but the Midlands club may be unable to sign the 32-year-old due to a few obstacles.
First of all, a move for the seasoned defender would undoubtedly be out of reach if they lose the relegation battle.
Second, Ayling needs guarantees regarding his playing time at the club before he potentially transfers to St Andrew’s, as he isn’t assured to play every week with Ethan Laird.
Finally, the Leeds player is expected to draw a lot of interest this summer, so the Blues will need to present themselves in a very strong light to the player if they hope to have any chance of signing him.
