Sheffield United has to make investments in a number of areas of the team as they prepare for a massive reconstruction project this summer.
I’ve already discussed the left-back dilemma and the reasons United needs to sign Harrison Burrows right away. However, I’ll be concentrating on the attack today.
Sadly, Sheffield United and Oli McBurnie are still in contract negotiations, but a deal for Daniel Jebbison, a 20-year-old striker, has been on the table for a few weeks. Furthermore, rumours of Jebbison’s leaving keep getting stronger over time.
There is some optimism that United’s number nine will sign a new contract later this month. The team’s offensive depth is still far from stacked, though.
As of right now, Chris Wilder’s forward alternatives are Rhian Brewster, Will Osula, and Louie Marsh; Cameron Archer is expected to be sold back to Aston Villa. The attacking depth would still be made up of guys with a dismal track record of fitness and two talented attackers who are still in the early stages of their careers, even with McBurnie added.
Although Osula and Marsh have a lot of potential, you really shouldn’t be putting your chances of getting promoted on the backs of two inexperienced players.
Sheffield United must sign Manchester City forward Liam Delap this summer
It is common knowledge that for the past two years, a cordial friendship has developed between Manchester City and the Blades. Tommy Doyle and James McAtee were loaned by City to United during the 2022–2023 promotion-winning campaign, and both players had breakthrough seasons under Paul Heckingbottom.
The next summer, Pep Guardiola approved McAtee’s return loan to Bramall Lane, but the 21-year-old, predictably, made far less of an impression in the Premier League. Of course, despite the fact that it was a terrible decision, City even assisted the Blades in acquiring Troyes defender Yasser Larouci on loan from City’s sister club in France.
Maybe Man City will be so nice as to assist Sheffield United again when they take on the formidable task of bringing in twelve players this summer.
Liam Delap, a young forward with promise, is the one player in the City ranks that really jumps out to me. The 21-year-old has already made 68 appearances in the Championship, tallying 12 goals and dishing out two assists.
Delap, the son of Stoke City icon Rory Delap, was expected to have a breakout season for Hull City the previous season. And although he shown his abilities by netting eight goals in the league, an injury derailed his development for several months. It was still a fantastic season, though.
He still has some kinks in his game that he has to work out before he graces the Premier League, so his injury might be a blessing in disguise. Consequently, another Championship loan is calling.
