Sheffield United are making efforts to secure loan deals for Villarreal striker Ben Brereton-Diaz and Anderlecht goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, per the Daily Mail.
The 24-year-old Chilean international Brereton-Diaz left Blackburn as a free agent and signed with La Liga team Villarreal last summer, but he has struggled to establish himself. The possibility of Brereton-Diaz joining could result in Benie Traore, a forward for Sheffield United, going on loan to Nantes.
With his eyes set on competing in the CONMEBOL pre-Olympic tournament later this month, Nantes is considering terminating the loan of Marquinhos, the Brazilian winger for Arsenal. As he looks to return to the Premier League, 37-year-old custodian Kasper Schmeichel is someone The Blades are hoping to sign.
After the custodian and Leicester City couldn’t come to an agreement to extend his £120,000-a-week contract, the custodian left England in August 2022 to join Nice.
Schmeichel joined Anderlecht in September 2023 after spending just one season with Nice.
After making 13 appearances for Anderlecht and keeping two clean sheets, Schmeichel’s contract with the Belgian team is scheduled to expire in the summer.
Brereton-Diaz may visit the UK again after leaving Blackburn in the summer. The forward has only started two games this season in the Spanish top division and has not scored in his 19 appearances for Villarreal since joining.
